EDIT: Sorry, friends! I mentioned in this post that the Puritans were the founders of the sobriety movement…which is not quite true. The Puritans were more than happy to lift a pint of cider while discussing Calvin’s Institutes and the Bible. It could be broadly said that Puritan ideas became important in the sobriety movement of the 19th century, but that’s as far as the link goes. For more on this, see here.
