2. Peace With God (Romans 5:1, Ecclesiastes)
Today’s sermon text is Romans 5:1, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Because it is Easter Sunday, I was expecting some people who would not normally be in church to be here. I began wondering, “Would the average person understand this verse at all?” In my mind, I was thinking of that scenario where someone that you don’t even know comes up to you and says, “Hey, man, you’ve been mean to me but I forgive you.” Your first response is, “Dude, I don’t even know you! I had no idea that there was anything between us! Why should I care that you now forgive me? This is your problem, not mine!”
I felt like I needed to get some perspective that everyone could relate to. So I went back to Ecclesiastes. In this sermon, we survey Ecclesiastes, to take a good look at the human condition. Why is it that we are perpetually frustrated, troubled, disappointed, burned out as humans? Could it be because we have fallen out of fellowship with our Creator? By the end of the sermon, we have taken a good look at the problem of humanity, so that the solution offered in Jesus Christ is real hope and Good News.
